BAKING BANANA & SQUASH MUFFINS
Baking takes many steps. The children learned patience and turn taking while they worked on other skills as they participated in measured, mixed, poured, and baked.
Early math
skills like portions and counting come from experiences provided during cooking
preparation. Macy and Kate used language skills and new vocabulary as they
talked about “half” of the butternut squash that was cut.

Evelyn measured the necessary baking soda for the muffin batter. The children discussed names of their ingredients as they watched each other work. (Social, language)
|
Eloïse worked with a teaspoon to scoop all of the seeds out of the squash before it was cut into smaller parts. She used fine motor skills and coordination to hold one side of the squash to steady it as she scooped with her right hand.
The children spent the day mixing, measuring, collaborating, and most importantly, learning! Finally, after baking in the hot oven, the completed banana and squash muffins were ready to eat! Yummy! (Emotional- sense of competence)

Landon poured the batter into the baking cups as two of his classmates patiently observed his work and waited their turns. (Cognitive, fine motor)
