Kitchen Chemistry

Preschool Investigation

Picture
The Kitchen Chemistry Investigation is a hands-on, exploratory activity designed to introduce preschoolers to foundational scientific concepts through engaging and developmentally appropriate experiences. Using everyday kitchen ingredients, children investigate chemical reactions, observe changes in states of matter, and experiment with mixing, measuring, and transforming materials.
This activity supports early science education by encouraging children to make predictions, ask questions, and explore outcomes. It also integrates cross-curricular learning by incorporating literacy (through ingredient lists and journaling), mathematics (through measuring and sequencing), and fine motor skills (through pouring, stirring, and manipulating materials).
Through collaboration and independent exploration, children develop critical thinking skills, expand their vocabulary, and connect their learning to everyday life. The Kitchen Chemistry Investigation not only fosters curiosity and creativity but also builds a foundation for lifelong scientific inquiry and discovery.

Evidence of Learning

The children collaborated to create ingredient lists, both as a class and individually, as part of their comprehension assessment. Additionally, they documented their observations and reflections in science journals, integrating literacy and scientific exploration into the activity. This approach allowed them to demonstrate understanding, creativity, and inquiry skills while engaging in both group and independent work.
