CAN WE USE THE POWER OF PLAY TO EDUCATE AN INNOVATIVE WORKFORCE?

The Bombeck Family Learning Center, Dayton, Ohio

Young children are like scientists. Their purpose in life is to make sense of their world. Discover how play can be a powerful learning tool.

MAKING BROWNIES

In this example of excellence, the teacher demonstrates how careful and intentional planning can allow emergent readers to understand the purpose of print. This teacher obviously knew her students and was able to plan an experience that challenged them in a hands-on and authentic manner. She also integrated reading and math in the activity while supporting cognitive, language and fine motor development in her students.

USING ASSESSMENT IN PLANNING

The Bombeck Family Learning Center, Dayton, Ohio

This example of excellence shows a team of teachers using the ACCESS Curriculum Framework (Adams, Baldwin, Comingore & Kelly) to plan an extended investigation. They begin by brainstorming and identifying the aspects of the topic that interests them. They also provide evidence that the children will be interested in the topic of worms. The teachers then break down the topic into concepts that help children learn more about the topic.  Only then do teachers iden-tify learning experiences. Assessment data helps teachers identify content standards to be considered at the end of the process so they can be addressed in meaningful, integrated, and connected ways.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT DURING TODDLER SNACK

The Bombeck Family Learning Center, Dayton, Ohio

This example of excellence describes authentic assessment strategies reflected in the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE) Joint Position Statement on Curriculum, Assessment and Program Evaluation. The video shows how toddler environments and daily routines can be staged to provide information about developmental levels. In one example, a snack experience is planned to support and assess fine motor, social and cognitive development. Examples of portfolio documentation are shared as are other examples of how skills can be observed in other areas of the classroom.

APPLE EXPERIMENT

The Bombeck Family Learning Center, Dayton, Ohio

This example of excellence was selected because it showcases quality teacher and child interaction around an important topic of study. The children are highly engaged in inquiry and are using math, language arts, problem solving, prediction and social skills in meaningful and relevant ways. This is an example of "how all the domains of development ... and learning are important, and closely interrelated. Children's development and learning in one domain influence and are influenced by what takes place in other domains (NAEYC, 2009, p11)." In addition to developmental domains, this learning experience connects math, science and language arts to address authentic questions.
